Christopher Sean Neary ATCL MusB (Hons) GRNCM PGCE
Chris Neary started playing brass instruments at the age of 8 when he began learning the Euphonium in Trowbridge & District Youth Brass Band and achieved his grade 8 under the tuition of Dr Michael Lomas at the John of Gaunt School by the time he was 13. He initially began learning the Trombone as a second study soon after that, achieving a distinction at grade 8 in two years and becoming Principal Trombone of Wiltshire & Swindon Youth Orchestra.
During Secondary School Chris was a member of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, National Children's Wind Ensemble and West Wiltshire Young Musicians as well as multiple instrumental/vocal groups at the John of Gaunt School. He performed as a soloist at the Royal Festival Hall, London at the age of 18 and frequently performed as both a trombone/euphonium soloist throughout his teens at many concert venues around the South West of England. He also reached the regional finals of BBC Young Musician of the Year.
Originally gaining a place on the joint degree course at the Royal Northern College of Music and Manchester University to study Euphonium, he switched his main study to Bass Trombone just before starting the course. Under the tuition of Adrian Morris, Andrew Berryman and Chris Houlding he regularly played in the RNCM’s Symphony Orchestra, Wind Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Brass Band and Brass Ensemble.
Chris has performed in masterclasses with Ben Van Dijk (Principal Bass Trombone - Rotterdam Philharmonic), Ian Bousefield (Former Principal Trombone - Vienna Philharmonic), Armin Bachman and Dr Robert Childs. He held a place on the reserve list for the European Union Youth Orchestra in 2004 and has played under many eminent conductors including Sir Mark Elder, Elgar Howarth, James Gourlay and Dr Roy Newsome in venues including the Royal Albert Hall, the Bridgewater Hall and Birmingham’s Symphony Hall.
Having completed a PGCE with Specialist Instrumental Teaching following his undergraduate degree at the RNCM, he began working as a music teacher for Wigan and Trafford Music Services and played in the Championship Section brass band Wire Brass. A year later he was offered the opportunity of living and working in India at Pathways World School, Gurgaon as a music teacher – the first ever instrumental brass teacher to be employed by the school!
On his return from India, Chris moved to Ipswich to start a job working as an instrumental teacher for Suffolk County Music Service and has lived there ever since. When not teaching music he enjoys playing/singing it at every available opportunity: singing with Henley Chamber Choir, as the bass trombonist with The Wolsey Orchestra, and, as trombonist and singer in the pop/function band Turntable. He also freelances as a trombonist around East Anglia for orchestras, bands and other ensembles.
